At MG Alabama aka Snowflakes of Alabama, our mission is to empower communities through education and resources. We believe in creating holistic solutions that uplift and inspire individuals to achieve their full potential while living with myasthenia gravis. We are a proud chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Holistic Society.
Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles, which are responsible for voluntary movements such as talking, swallowing, and lifting objects. The condition occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly produces antibodies that disrupt communication between nerves and muscles, leading to muscle fatigue and weakness.
Types of Myasthenia Gravis
MuSK-Positive MG (Muscle-Specific Kinase Antibody-Positive MG):
This form involves antibodies against MuSK, a protein involved in the formation and maintenance of neuromuscular junctions. MuSK-positive MG often presents with more pronounced bulbar symptoms (affecting speech and swallowing) and may respond differently to treatments.
Seronegative MG:
Patients with seronegative MG do not have detectable antibodies against the typical targets (such as AChR or MuSK) in standard blood tests, yet they still experience characteristic symptoms. Diagnosis is often based on clinical presentation and response to nerve conduction studies.
Anti-LRP4-Positive MG:
This subtype involves antibodies against LRP4 (Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4), a protein that plays a role in neuromuscular junction formation. Anti-LRP4-positive MG is relatively rare and may have features overlapping with other forms of MG.
AChR-Positive MG (Acetylcholine Receptor Antibody-Positive MG):
The most common form, characterized by antibodies against acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction. It typically presents with fluctuating muscle weakness that worsens with activity.
Understanding and Managing MG
While MG can be challenging, many individuals manage their symptoms effectively with treatments such as medication, immunotherapy, and sometimes surgery. Early diagnosis and personalized treatment plans are essential for improving quality of life.
If you suspect you or a loved one may have Myasthenia Gravis, consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and management.
Our meetings are held the second Monday of the month at 6PM. Everyone is welcome to attend. For our Zoom link contact Ebony@MGHolisticSociety.org
Ebony Bell is the founder of the Snowflakes of Alabama support group, a dedicated support and advocacy organization for individuals living with myasthenia gravis (MG). As someone personally diagnosed with MG in 2017, following her first major crisis two years prior, Ebony knows firsthand the emotional and physical battles this rare autoimmune disease can bring. Her early experiences of isolation and confusion sparked a deep passion to ensure others facing MG would never feel alone.
Guided by faith, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to community, Ebony created Snowflakes of Alabama to be a safe haven a place where people can feel seen, supported, and empowered. Through education, connection, and compassionate leadership, she works to uplift others navigating their own MG journeys, always encouraging them to seek out the good, no matter how challenging the road may seem. She is thrilled to now be part of the MG Holistic Society.
Ebony believes MG may be a part of her life, but it doesn’t define her. Her guiding mantra: "I have MG—MG doesn’t have me." And with God, all things are possible.
Deric Sippial, is a 24-year-old from Alabama living with seronegative myasthenia gravis. He was diagnosed in 2022, and since then, he has been committed to raising awareness about this often misunderstood and invisible illness.
Living with MG has its challenges, but it’s also given him a deeper sense of purpose to educate, connect, and support others in the MG community.
" Whether you’re newly diagnosed, supporting a loved one, or just looking to learn more, I hope this site helps you feel seen, informed, and empowered." - Deric Sippial
